The Vengara seat is vacant due to the resignation of P K Kunhalikutty (national general secretary of IUML) as MLA to contest in the Lok Sabha bypoll in Malappuram constituency in April which was necessitated by the demise of E Ahamed. PK Kunhalikutty is currently the MP of Malappuram constituency. He was also the Minister for Industries and Information Technology in the Government of Kerala. The three major candidates are LDF’s P.P Basheer, UDF’s K.N.A Khader and BJP’s K. Janachandran.
